Serious Reading Skills
Three Strategies for Reading to Remember
1.Start by identifying your purpose.
- Are you reading mainly to understand ?
- Are you reading to find the most important facts?
- Are you reading to prepare for a test?
- Are you reading because you are interested?
- Are you reading to answer questions? Your questions or someone else's questions?
2. Use a Simple Strategy called KWL.
- Start by writing down what you already KNOW on this topic. If you know very little, include the details. If you know more, summarize it.
- The second step is what you WANT to learn. Write a list of questions? If you are reading to understand, write questions about what you want to understand better. If you are preparing for a test, write questions you expect to find on the test.
- L stands for what you LEARNED. When you finish reading, write a summary of what you learned. This will help you remember it. If you discover that you still don't understand or there is information you didn't learn, go back over the material again.
Using questions helps you focus as you read.
Summarizing helps you remember
3. Take Reading Notes.
Taking reading notes is far more helpful than highlighting. Too many students highlight material that MIGHT be important. When you take reading notes, it requires a little more effort and you are more likely to be sure the information is important before writing it down.
